In Praise of Dialogue

"Any weight that pulls down will always find a counterweight, and so the motifs in Marianne Greber's pictures seem to float. The point is not to reduce the weight of being, but to explore the lightness of what is heavy: the art of living mingles heavy with light, what is complicated becomes simple, what is shrouded in fog is cleared up, and what seems painfully confused resolves into encompassing serenity.

The heavy and crushing burden of the world lifts to make room for a perception of what is virtually imperceptible, of the small, agile, and untroubled. Such nimble lightness is a symbol of freedom about to leap off, not unlike the shaman negating the weight of his body and levitating into the air. The freedom of the other is the condition of my own; that is especially manifest in the dialogue between Greber and Fink. Fink transforms himself in this play, for play suspends the gravity of time.

It is only through play that life becomes a work of art. And the art of living is the interplay of all human senses. The quest for a communicative art of living reveals itself time and again to be also a descent to the origins, to militancy, to the freedom of anarchy. "In order to fulfill itself," the Mexican lyric poet and essayist Octavio Paz writes, "freedom must incarnate and face up to a different conscience, a different will: the other is, contemporaneously, the limit and the source of my freedom. In the one extreme, freedom is unique, an exception; in the other, plurality and communal life."
