Eyes on Secret Life k/haus Metro Galerie Burggasse 21 Friday, 5. November 2010
Picture series (6 to 133 pieces), lined up as photo curtains readable from both sides and showing Ona B.’s performances. They represent events similarly to a film. Each individual picture is A4 sized, laminated, punched, mounted with cable straps, and hung up freely in the room with metal hooks on piano wire. Aside from their significance as a protective screen, the curtains in their fragility also epitomize danger, loss, and getting over.
Fits of panic keep accompanying the artist’s existence, and this state of mind is actively coped with by Ona B. in her performances. High anxiety, panic attacks, and fear of suffocation in water are made the subjects of different works. Where the sharpened gaze alone, that is, a targeted look at the world in detail, cannot reveal the truth searched for, a parallel path leads back into the self, the abysmal self of dreams and visions. Thus weaknesses are turned into strengths and become a strategy for survival.
